Supervisor: Prof. Russell Bonduriansky

Synopsis

Some animals reproduce by cloning. But, despite being genetically identical, clones can vary because of micro-environmental variation or developmental noise. The extent of variation among clones will affect the amount of phenotypic variation present in populations of such animals, with potentially important consequences for population persistence. Yet, the extent of such variation is poorly understood.

Aims

This project will explore the extent and nature of variation among clones of the springtail Folsomia candida.

Benefits to student

You'll work on an interesting research question and learn how to design and carry out experiments, carry out sophisticated statistical analysis and write a scientific paper. Honours students in the Bonduriansky lab often publish their work in prestigious journals, such as The American Naturalist, Functional Ecology, Animal Behaviour, and Scientific Reports.
