Recent Developments in Rapid Evidence Synthesis

Academia produces an estimated two million new publications every year. This rate of production is so high as to challenge our capacity to track developments within individual research fields, or to apply new learnings to societal or environmental problems. Therefore, a key goal for scientists is to find ways to filter, understand and synthesize this wealth of information in near-real time. Although a number of computational tools exist that can support this process, most are rarely used in academia. In this talk, Martin will discuss the range of options available to new users, the research involved in testing and validating these methods, and recent efforts to expand the universe of open-source software for research synthesis.

Biography: Martin Westgate is a Research Fellow from the Fenner School of Environment and Society at the Australian National University. His research focusses on how computational and statistical methods can provide new insights on old questions in ecology and conservation biology. He is developer of the R package 'revtools' for interactive visualisation of bibliographic data during reviews and evidence synthesis projects.
