Research & Current Projects

  1. Using structural geology to understand the geological development of displaced, rotated and  multiply deformed terranes in the Southern New England Orogen. Recent studies have focussed on creating a new geology map of the Hastings Block, determining the presence or absence of the Manning Orocline and creating a 3D model of the Northern Hastings Block with Mr Jie Yan, PhD candidate.
  2. Field studies of weakly to intensely deformed granites within the Wyangala Batholiths have been undertaken to better develop models of granite emplacement, deformation and exhumation. Studies have focussed on determining the pluton emplacement ages by dating U-Pb in zircons with Dr I Williams, RSES, ANU, Canberra. Research has been undertaken on the fission track ages of granites on the margin of the Wyangala Batholith with Prof. B. Kohn, Melbourne University. Further research has been undertaken on dating  key faults transecting the Wyangala Granite. This has involved K-Ar dating of illite from fault gouge with Dr H. Zwingmann, CSIRO, Perth.
  3. Prof. Helga de Wall’s Group at GeoZentrum Nordbayern, Germany is assisting with AMS studies to better characterise mylonitisation within the Wyangala Granite with financial support for visits to Germany from the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung.
  4. Recent studies have involved Dr M Forster, RSES, ANU and involved Ar-Ar dating of K feldspars to better constrain the timing of post-emplacement deformation. David Durney and I are working on better describing the field and thin section changes during mylonitisation in the Wyangala Granite.
