Training activities
ACIAR is building technical skills at CBAD with a group of Master Trainers using a 'train the trainer' approach. The purpose of this activity is to enable these Master Trainers to deliver training programs to other government staff and NGOs and provide technical support at reconstruction sites.
Additionally, a technical training program for government staff and NGOs will run until the end of 2008. This program involves intensive field and class-based training on soil assessment and remediation, hydrological assessment, pond engineering, pond management and alternative farming practices. This training program also targets technical extension teams comprising staff from CBAD and Dinas Perikanan. The technical extension teams are the primary mechanism to deliver technical support to farmers and NGOs working on small rehabilitation projects.

Completed training programs:
- April/May 2005 - Intensive 10 day program on soil and disease assessment and management provided to 26 GoI staff from CBAD and Dinas Perikanan
- September 2005 - Joint training program with FAO on the steps to sustainable redevelopment of aquaculture ponds for CBAD, Dinas Perikanan and NGOs
- March 2006 - Pond, dyke and canal engineering and soil management training program to CBAD staff and NGOs
- May/June 2006 - Field training in soil assessment and hydrology for Master Trainers and NGOs working in Pidie.
- June 2006 - Laboratory training (soil analyses) provided to CBAD laboratory staff - conducted at the Research Institute for Coastal Aquaculture in Maros, South Sulawesi.
- September 2006 - AARP extension workshop and field visits.
- November 2006 - Soil and environmental assessment training workshop for CBAD Master Trainers.
- February/March 2007 - Soil and environmental assessment road show workshops in sub-districts for Dinas Perikanan.
- February 2007 - Soils refresher course for CBAD Master Trainers.
- February 2007 - Pond and canal design workshop for CBAD Master Trainers and Provincial Dinas Perikanan.
- August 2007 - Pond soil remediation and management workshop for CBAD Master Trainers.

| Training programs will continue in collaboration with the AARP and FAO. Future programs will continue to cover soils, hydrology, site selection, site assessment, disease diagnosis and management, pond, dyke and canal design and other best management practices. Training programs will be advertised on this site. |

Soil Mapping and Hydrological Assessment
- The project team has commenced sampling and mapping soils in Pidie to support the French Red Cross (FRC) tambak reconstruction project. Soils are currently being analysed for pyrite concentration, acid producing potential, chemical properties, mineralogy and fertiliser and lime requirements. Optimal dyke and canal dimensions have also been calculated.
- Soil assessment and mapping activities will continue through to 2008.
- The team has collected and analysed hydrological data in Pidie. Tidal data for Pidie have been released to NGOs and other projects.
- The distribution of ASS in Aceh has been mapped and will be ground-truthed in late 2007.
Future soil and hydrological assessment activities are currently being developed in collaboration with the AARP. Activities will be extended to other districts on a needs basis.

Software development
Software (freeware) called PondTool has been developed by Tarunamulia and Jes Sammut. PondTool was developed to help NGOs, consultants and government staff to:
- Predict tides at the different redevelopment sites
- Calculate optimal dyke and canal dimensions
- Design water gates suited to local hydrological conditions
- Calculate lime and fertiliser requirements
- Determine soil texture classes
- Calculate growth, feed conversion ratios and optimal feeding rates for each stage of production
Version 1.1 was released in October 2006 and is available from CBAD, Ujung Batee or by contacting Dr Jes Sammut on j.sammut@unsw.edu.au.
Extension Activities
ACIAR and the AARP are jointly producing extension materials which include brochures, manuals on best management practices, posters and technical notes (See Links Page). Relevant extension materials from ACIAR Project FIS/97/22 are also available on the links page.
Extension teams involving staff from Dinas Perikanan and CBAD are now active in the field providing support to farmers and NGOs. The teams are equipped with analytical and sampling equipment to facilitate on site assessment of soils. An AARP-funded mobile laboratory with soil, water quality and disease diagnostic equipment will provide field-based services by late 2006.
CBAD Master Trainers are also providing support and coordinating field training activities with support from ACIAR and the AARP.
