"The newly emerged field of study known as "road ecology" explores and addresses the relationship between the natural environment and the road system. In essence, road ecology is a coherent framework with a body of principles and a range of applications useful to transportation planning, practice, and policy."
- R.T.T. Forman

The effect of roads on the environment encompasses chemical and noise pollution, fragmentation of wildlife habitat, the formation of barriers to wildlife movement and dispersal, mortality of wildlife through collisions with vehicles, degradation of natural patterns and processes and the spread of weeds and feral pests.

Our research group seeks to develop understanding of these issues in an Australian context. We have formed a coalition between government agencies, animal welfare organisations and our research institution to strategically research road ecology.

Our aim is to ultimately make recommendations on appropriate road design that reduces the impact of roads on the environment, makes them permeable to Australian wildlife and allows for safe and efficient transportation.
