ALEX JAMES - PhD STUDENT

RESEARCH SUPERVISOR - DR DAVE ELDRIDGE

I am interested in the way that organisms modify their environment and how this affects ecosystem function. Organisms that modify, maintain, create or destroy habitat are known as 'ecosystem engineers'. By altering resource availability to others in the community ecosystem engineers can affect both productivity and biodiversity.

I am looking at several aspects of ecosystem engineering including:
  • How the reintroduction of bilbies and bettongs to arid regions of Australia affects plant germination and the distribution of water and nutrients.
  • The effects of ant nests on the flow of water in the Chihuahuan Desert in New Mexico.
  • The relationships between ecosystem health and the amount and type of soil disturbances in a landscape
