RESEARCH - SPATIAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS

There are strong research links between the SIS group within BEES and national and international agencies including the CSIRO, Australian Greenhouse Gas Office, Environment Australia, the U.S. National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA) and the European Space Agency (ESA). The capacity of the group has been considerably enhanced by the recently successful application for the CRC for Spatial Information, of which UNSW is a Program Partner.

Our current research strengths include:
  • field and imaging spectroscopy as applied to soil and regolith studies (Taylor)
  • the application of remotely sensed hyperspectral and multi-temporal data to vegetation stress and biogeochemistry (Merton)
  • the use of synthetic aperture radar in vegetation analysis, forest biomass estimation and wetlands assessment (Milne)
  • the use of GIS and geo-computational methods in environmental modelling associated with salinity, land cover mapping and plant endemism (Laffan).
