Located 112 km north of Broken Hill, New South Wales (latitude 31°05'S, longitude 142°43'E) in the Parish of Hume, County Mootwingee. Occupying Western Lands Lease No. 101094, an area of 38,888 hectares, the property is held by the University of New South Wales as a 'lease in perpetuity' for the study of the arid zone environment and its flora and fauna, particularly in relation to the pastoral industry and sustainable land management.
It is the only research station in the arid zone of New South Wales. Areas have been monitored and data collected continuously, in some cases for over 30 years.

The Station and its record form a unique facility for research and education recognised through registration as part of the National Estate.
The Field Station has a range of facilities to cater for individuals and groups engaged in education or research at the station.
