COWAN FIELD STATION

The Cowan Field Station encompasses an area of about 4 ha in the Muogamarra Reserve, near the town of Cowan on the northern outskirts of Sydney NSW. The field station incorporates a laboratory/service facility, and a number of cages and yards for holding various animal species.

The station forms an essential component of the School's activities, as it provides a means for research, holding and breeding of larger members of the Australian vertebrate fauna.

Current research activities include:
  1. The behavioural biology of macropodid marsupials,
  2. Research and development of technologies to mitigate roadkill of native fauna,
  3. Understanding predator-prey relationships in native mammals.
The facilities are also used in Undergraduate, Graduate and Postgraduate teaching and occasionally, by visiting researchers and members of other institutions.

Staff at Cowan
Mr Jan Nedved is in charge of the day-to-day running of the station and provides expert service in animal husbandry and the maintenance of facilities. Associate Professor Rob Brooks, School of Biological Earth & Environmental Sciences, is the Director of the Field Station and coordinator of research activities there.

All inquiries should be addressed to the Director of Cowan Field Station at the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences, UNSW, Sydney NSW 2052 Australia. The field station can be contacted on (02) 94561637.
