TRAINING AND INDUCTIONS

UNSW Compliance:

All new staff must undergo OHS Awareness Training. This course is faculty specific being organised by the Science OHS Coordinator. Please see the School Safety Officer to arrange bookings.

Training must be provided to all staff, visitors and students in the safe operating practices for all plant, equipment and workplaces in accordance with the above guidelines and procedures. To comply with these procedures, BEES has implemented the following plan:

Step 1
All new staff and students must receive a safety induction from their supervisor. Please use the OHS Induction Form and the Laboratory Induction and Authorisation Form as appropriate. Copies of the acknowledgement are kept by the Safety Officer and by the school office. Supervisors will document a training needs analysis and develop an OHS training plan for all new staff and students within 2 weeks of their commencing employment or study.

All supervisory staff should do OHS Risk Management for Supervisors or equivalent (see Safety Officer for details).

Step 2
A risk assessment is required for each piece of plant or equipment and for each task or procedure within a project. Forms are available to assess the hazards and risks associated with plant and equipment throughout the School. Academic supervisors are required to complete project risk assessment forms with their students.

Step 3
All staff, postgraduate and honours student should receive formal Workplace Safety Training. The most relevant course for BEES is Laboratory Safety and all staff and students involved in laboratory-based research should do this course. Radiation Safety Training is mandatory for those using radioactive isotopes in their research.

Step 4
Specialised training in areas such as biohazards, radiation, manual handling, fire safety, etc will be provided as such courses are run. Training on various pieces of office and laboratory equipment will also be provided. Contact the Safety Officer for details.

Step 5
Each member of staff and students undertaking training will have that training recorded in the Plant and Equipment Training Register.
Training records shall include:
a) The names of employees receiving training and the dates of attendance
b) An outline of the course content
c) The names of persons providing the induction and training programs.
In meeting its obligations towards the management of OHS, the School of BEES encourages staff to obtain formal qualifications as Senior First Aid Officers and to be trained as 'competent persons' to conduct Electrical Testing and Tagging. See the School Safety Officer for details.

OHS COMPETENCY

Staff and students are required to follow defined OHS safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in order to ensure their own safety and that of others in the workplace. Supervisors must determine and assess the OHS competency of employees, contractors, labour hire, students and visitors prior to their safely carrying out the tasks associated with their position responsibilities.
Competency Assessment Form A - For staff without supervisory responsibilities
Competency Assessment Form B - For staff with supervisory responsibilities.

LICENCES

Members of staff and students must hold the appropriate Licences and Certification for all plant and equipment to which they have access. These documents are to be sighted by the Safety Officer and recorded in the Staff Register of Skills and Competencies.

DIVING

Diving is under the control of the UNSW Diving Coordinator. Strict rules apply.

Divers are to hold a minimum of a CMAS two-star or equivalent certificate, possess a valid certificate of medical fitness to dive which is updated yearly, and should be able to provide proof of at least 15 hours diving experience in open water in a variety of dive sites and conditions, including at least 7 hours of diving below 10m.
