SAFETY SIGNAGE

UNSW Compliance:
Laboratory Safety Manual - Appendix A

 
Safety Signs should be made or purchased in accordance with the Australian Standard covering safety signs: AS1319-1994 [Safety Signs for the Occupational Environment].
 
The OHS and Workers Compensation has a collection of custom-made UNSW Safety Hazard Posters. They are A3 sized and are typically placed on the outside of laboratory doors to provide information on safety hazards within, PPCE to be worn in this area, emergency contact details for the laboratory, location of first aid kit etc. Please see the School Safety Officer for details.
 
Laboratory doors must indicate:
  • The name of the person in charge of the laboratory
  • Nature of hazardous or dangerous goods stored
  • Required Personal Protective Equipment for entry.
Signs inside laboratories must indicate:
  • Names of students and others allowed to work within the laboratory
  • Emergency Procedures and Facilities
  • Safe Working Procedures
  • Laboratory Layout Plan
Laboratory Layout Plan must indicate:
  • Location of Risk Assessments
  • Location of MSDSs
  • Fire Extinguishers, Spill Kits and First Aid Kits (where installed).
