PERSONAL PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT

UNSW Compliance: Laboratory Safety Manual Guidelines

Personal protective clothing must be worn where it is required by a Material Safety Data Sheet or where a Risk Assessment calls for its use. All labs must have PPCE available including lab coats, gloves, safety glasses and facemasks. Appropriate footwear is required to be worn in all laboratories. Shoes must have closed toe and closed heel.

These guidelines exist for the following laboratories:

1. Teaching Laboratories (Rooms G01, G20, G21, 402 and 449)
  • Minimum PPCE required are closed toe shoes and labcoat.
  • Other PPCE - as listed in the risk assessment for the class.
2. Teaching Laboratories (Rooms G07, G11, G12, 640 and 642)
  • Required PPCE is closed toe shoes.
  • No hazardous chemicals permitted to be used in these rooms.
3. Teaching laboratory 401
  • Minimum PPCE is closed toe shoes.
  • Other PPCE - as listed in the risk assessment for the class.
  • Where the only PPCE required are closed toe shoes, the risk assessment for the class must include the following controls:
    • All seats and benches are cleaned immediately before the class is scheduled.
    • All hazardous materials are removed from the room beforehand.
4. Research Laboratories (including Storerooms and Constant Temperature Rooms)
  • Minimum PPCE is closed toe shoes.
  • Other PPCE - as listed in the risk assessments for the work carried on in the
    particular lab.
NOTES
  • Closed toe shoes enclose the back of the foot as well. They must not be able to slip off when the wearer is moving backwards.
  • PPCE is mandatory for all persons in a lab, even when they are not involved in the work for which the PPCE is necessary.
  • Laboratories include associated storerooms, preparation rooms and microscope rooms.
  • Laboratory Supervisors are responsible for the enforcement of this policy in the laboratories under their control.
