HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES AND DANGEROUS GOODS

All staff and students must be familiar with the Introduction to Dangerous Goods Guideline and abide by the directions of the Hazardous Substances and Dangerous Goods Procedure. Staff or students who may be exposed to hazardous substances through their work or study are required to undergo Chemical Safety Training .

All laboratories must have the following documentation
A Hazardous Substances balance is available for use in Room 551. See the School Safety Officer for access.

CHEMICAL STORAGE AND LABELLING

All Chemical Substances are to be appropriately stored in relation to quantities and packing groups as outlined in the Introduction to Dangerous Goods Guideline. Chemicals from different packing groups, even though they may be in small amounts, may not be stored on shelves alongside each other.

Supervisors must ensure that all containers of Hazardous Substances supplied to, used, or handled in the workplace shall be appropriately labelled to allow the substance to be used safely, and that MSDSs are accessible to staff/students exposed to hazardous substances. Appropriate labels may be downloaded from ChemAlert.

Spill Kits must be available in all laboratories where dangerous goods are stored.

MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS (MSDS)

All Hazardous Substances and Dangerous Goods must have MSDSs available, which are complete and not more than five years old. It is the responsibility of the Supervisor to ensure that MSDSs and other chemical information is readily available to all in the workplace, either as physical or electronic copies. A laboratory layout plan must be placed within the laboratory indicating where the MSDSs are stored.

All new chemicals coming into the School are required to have a MSDS provided with them or be available as defined by the Purchasing Policy. Material Safety Data Sheets will specify:
  • The ingredients of the product
  • The health effects of the product and first aid instructions
  • Precautions to follow when you use the product
  • Safe Handling and storage information
MSDS should be read and a Risk Assessment made prior to using the product. MSDS and Risk Assessments for chemicals may be downloaded from Chem-Alert.

CHEM ALERT

UNSW has a licence for this chemical information database which is useful for producing current Material Safety Data Sheets, Risk Assessments and labels for various chemicals. To use ChemAlert you will be prompted for your Unipass and Unipin: Chem-Alert

DANGEROUS GOODS LIFT

Only the Dangerous Goods Lift must be used when transporting any dangerous goods between floors. Dangerous Goods must not travel accompanied within lifts or sent in lifts that are uncontrolled (automatically open when called). The Dangerous Goods Lift is Lift No 5, located at the eastern end of the Biological Sciences Building.

To use the dangerous goods lift, two people are needed, one to send the dangerous goods, the other to receive. Each needs a key. To get the lift control keys, go to the BEES Student Office, Biological Sciences Room G27. The keys will have to be signed for.

First Person
  1. Take lift No.5 to the floor from which you wish to load the dangerous goods.
  2. Insert the key into the switch and turn it clockwise to ON. The lift remains at the floor with its doors open.
  3. Place dangerous goods in lift.
  4. Press the button of the floor to which you wish to send the dangerous goods.
  5. Exit the lift.
  6. Turn key clockwise to START and hold it there until the doors close and the lift has reached its destination.
  7. Turn key anticlockwise to OFF and remove it.

Second Person
  1. Wait at the level to which the dangerous goods are to be sent.
  2. When the lift arrives, insert the key into the switch and turn it clockwise to ON. The lift remains at the floor with its doors open.
  3. Remove the dangerous goods.
  4. Turn the key to OFF and remove it.
  5. After you finish moving the dangerous goods, take the keys back to the BEES Student Office and have their return signed for.
Note:
There is a $500.00 charge for loss or non-return of keys.
