ELECTRICAL SAFETY

UNSW Compliance: Portable Electrical Inspection, Testing and Tagging Guideline
Plant and Equipment Procedure

SUPERVISORS

It is the responsibility of supervisors to:
  • ensure that all electrical equipment is properly maintained and serviced as required
  • ensure all new electrical equipment is properly tagged upon entry to BEES
  • provide a Risk Assessment on all electrical equipment
  • ensure that electrical testing and tagging schedules are maintained
  • immediately notify the Safety Officer or a member of the OHSC in the event of an electrical hazard
ALL STAFF AND STUDENTS

All personnel are required to take care when using either power points or electrical equipment. Specifically, everyone either using or inspecting power points should:
  1. Look at the condition of a power point before you use it and don't touch a visibly damaged power point as this could pose a safety risk to yourself.
Report any damaged power point immediately so that it can be repaired promptly. Students should tell the nearest staff member about the electrical hazard.

  2. Staff members who notice an electrical hazard or to whom a student has reported the hazard, should notify the School Safety Officer and verbally report the hazard and the location where the hazard was found. The Safety Officer shall then complete UNSW Hazard Report Form (OHS001), so there is a written record that they have reported the problem and then fax the hazard report to the zone office to record corrective action.

  3. Place a handwritten notice in front of the damaged power point to warn others of the potential hazard and that it is being reported and date of your notice.

  4. If an incident occurs that involves a person receiving an electric shock, the witness to this incident should not approach the person until the power source has been isolated and it is safe for them to do so.

  5. Any witness to a person receiving an electric shock on campus should immediately contact Security Emergency on extension 56666 if you have access to an internal telephone or else telephone 9385 6666 if using a mobile phone. Advise the exact room and building location of the incident so that Security can provide accurate directions for the ambulance or fire brigades.
