WASTE DISPOSAL
Waste material must be disposed of through the appropriate Waste Management System. OHS&WC co-ordinate the disposal of chemical, biological and radioactive waste for the University. The following procedures apply in BEES.
BIOLOGICAL WASTE
ANIMAL CARCASES
CHEMICAL WASTE
Chemical waste, sharps and broken glass must be stored temporarily within the laboratory that generates the waste while it awaits collection. Compatibility of storage must, however, be taken into account when chemicals are left for collection.
The practice of disposing of chemicals down the sink is strictly forbidden and hazardous substances must, under no circumstances, be allowed to enter storm water drains.
RADIOACTIVE WASTE
Radioactive waste is stored in the lab area where it is generated until it has decayed sufficiently to allow it to be disposed of in the Radioactive Waste system.
