BEES Seminar Professor Nelson Eby, University of Massachusetts. Taming the killer lakes of the Cameroon volcanic line This Seminar will be held on the 30th August 2005 in Room 456 at 4.00pm. ABSTRACT In August of 1984, Lake Monoun, a crater lake in the Cameroon volcanic line, erupted a CO2 gas cloud that caused 20+ fatalities in the immediate area. A similar gas eruption in August of 1986 from Lake Nyos was responsible for more than 1700 fatalities. These relatively unique events attracted a great deal of international interest and research on these lakes has been ongoing for 20 years. This talk will summarize the results of the scientific research and will describe the hazard warning systems and remediation efforts currently underway at both lakes. |
