In this talk I will describe the activities of the FATE Program since it started again at UNSW in late 2004. We have been concentrating on how conservation through sustainable use (CSU) of native species can be implemented on a landscape scale. At present much of our effort has been on the large kangaroo species which are the focus of the existing kangaroo industry. Our kangaroo related activities include:
- a submission to the Kangaroo Management Program of NSW DEC,
- a kangaroo marketing project in collaboration with UTS School of Marketing funded by RIRDC,
- an adaptive management trial of collaborative management of kangaroos by landholders in the Barrier Area Rangecare Group, centred around Fowler's Gap Arid Zone Research Station.
In parallel with these activities we have been exploring approaches to monitoring and assessment (with a major emphasis on Landscape Function Analysis or LFA), collaborative approaches to implementing regional NRM targets and incentives for conservation on private land. We are working towards the development of land-use strategies that combine conservation and commercial return.
