RESEARCH INTERESTS

Unconventional Oil and Gas Petroleum Systems (coal seam gas, shale gas, shale oil, geothermal, and methane hydrates).

Petroleum Reservoir Geochemistry and Exploration Risk Assessment for conventional (high CO2 gas fields, gas condensates, heavy oil, tar mats, and salt structures) and unconventional energy resources.

Environmental aspects of low emission energy technologies including integrated assessment of CO2 capture and geological storage, and Sustainable Management of energy and water resources.

Applications of advanced characterization tools such as electron microprobe techniques, and vitrinite reflectance anisotropy) to oil and gas exploration, thermal maturation studies, paleo-stress pattern, coal seam gas drainage, micro-cleat mineralisation, shale gas characterisation, and gas outburst management.

Application of 3-D modelling tools for prospectivity mapping and risk assessment for unconventional and unconventional energy resources.

Over the past couple of years specifically focussing on removing technical, environmental and economic constraints to the deployment of low emission technologies including technology status, carbon management strategies, pollution and waste reduction, water sustainability, and sustainable management of energy resources, and in providing high quality scientific information for use in regulatory and policy decision making.

Geological and Engineering factors affecting coal seam gas exploration and production in the Gloucester Basin, NSW, Australia (Project sponsored by the UNSW School of Petroleum Engineering).

Impact of salt structures on temperature field and thermal maturation of organic matter (with the UNSW School of Petroleum Engineering).

The influence of igneous intrusions on coal seam gas and shale gas potential of the Eastern Australia sedimentary basins.

Development of Shale Gas Handbook for the International Committee for Coal and Organic Petrology (ICCP) (with the School of Petroleum Engineering).

Impact of thermodynamic conditions of the Gunnedah-Bowen Basin, NSW on carbon dioxide storage capacity estimates (with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

Potential for Carbon Dioxide Geological Storage in Basalt Formations of the Gunnedah-Bowen Basin, NSW, Australia.
