HOW TO ENROL FOR A POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH PROGRAM
Whilst prospective Higher Degree Research Students may apply directly for admission to the University without contacting the School, they are strongly encouraged to adhere to the following sequence:
Check your eligibility for the programs you are interested in. The entrance requirements for Research degree programs are on the UNSW webpage FUTURE STUDENTS - Postgraduate Research. You should contact one of BEES Postgraduate Studies Coordinators Dr Shawn Laffan for Geography, GIS and Remote Sensing, Professor Ross McMurtrie for Biological Science and Marine Science, and Dr Paul Lennox for Geology, for further information or advice.
Identify a research area and potential supervisor(s). You may consult the Research and the Academic Staff pages on the School Web site to identify possible project areas and supervisors. Contact the relevant Postgraduate Studies Coordinator (see above) to discuss these matters in more detail or contact potential supervisors directly. You are encouraged to discuss possible projects with a variety of potential supervisors and, if locally based, you may find it helpful to talk with current postgraduate students.
Apply for admission. After a staff member has indicated willingness to supervise you and an informal agreement has been reached on a project area, you must apply to the University for admission to a Higher Degree Research program. Application forms can be downloaded from this site and note that there are different forms for local (i.e. Australian Citizens) and International Students.
Apply for scholarships. You will need financial support to provide a living allowance and, depending on residency status, perhaps also for course fees. For details of available scholarships providing support consult Scholarships and discuss support with your potential supervisor and the Postgraduate Studies Coordinator.
WHAT DOES IT COST TO DO A RESEARCH DEGREE?
Australian Permanent Residents: The Graduate Diploma, Higher Degree Qualifying programs, and Courswork Masters programs are usually fee-paying and you should check the current cost with the Postgraduate Section.
Non-residents: Course fees are charged for all higher degrees and the UNSW Fee Policy should be checked. A number of competitive scholarships are available each year under the International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS) scheme. These cover course fees for Masters and Doctoral research programs but do not pay a living allowance. However, Schools and Faculties may contribute to living costs and you should check the current situation with a Postgraduate Studies Coordinator (see above).
SCHOLARSHIPS
Funding is available from a number of sources.
APA Australian Postgraduate Awards: These are Australian government scholarships and are available to citizens and permanent residents of Australia. They are competitive and you will need a first class honours degree to obtain one. The awards are normally for a maximum of 3 years Applications are submitted to the university at which you propose to study and the closing date is 31st October each year. Full details are available from theInternational Scholarships Unit.
Faculty Scholarships: The Faculty of Science may offer a limited number of scholarships for research degrees and details of current offerings may be viewed on the Science Web pages or obtained from the Faculty Office.
Scholarships from Research Funds: Under certain circumstances your supervisor may be able to offer a Scholarship which will cover or contribute to living expenses. Usually this is only possible where the proposed research for the degree is part of a larger project for which for which the supervisor has obtained external research funding. Such scholarships are sometimes advertised on the School Website or externally and it is worthwhile enquiring whether such support might be available when having discussions with your potential supervisor(s).
International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS): These are government scholarships open only to students who are not permanent residents of Australia or New Zealand. The Scholarships are competitive and applications are made once a year to the university of choice. The closing date is in August each year. The Scholarships only cover fees but contributions to living allowances are often provided at School level or in some cases may be provided as a scholarship from research funds. Details can be obtained from a Postgraduate Studies Coordinator and your supervisor.
Other Funding Sources: Funding may be available under schemes presented by your government or in collaboration with Australian agencies such as Ausaid.
