MODULE A* - INTRODUCTION, SAFETY AND SEMINAR SKILLS
Convenors: Mark Adams, Paul Lennox and David Hair
Session 1 and 2
Time: Week 1, Monday 10am - 1 pm, and Tuesday 9:30 am-12 noon
Place: Room 456
Contact hours: 6 hours (max)
Assessment: Risk Assessment form to David Hair by Monday Week 3
Value: 5% of BEES4511 (pass/fail)
Monday:
  • Introduction, and division of students into two seminar modules (C1 and C2), (Adams, 30 min)
  • Assignment of seminar speaking topics (Brooks, Lennox)
  • Time Management & Conflict Resolution (Lennox, 60 min)
  • Safety (Hair, 60 min).
Tuesday:
  • Seminar basics in Powerpoint (Cohen 9:30-11:00 am)
  • Library skills (Biomed Library 11-1pm)
 
MODULE B* - WRITING SKILLS
Convenvor: Mark Adams
Session 1 and 2
Time: Week 2, Monday 10am - 1 pm, and Tuesday 9 am-12 noon
Place: Room 456
Contact hours: 6 hours (max)
Content: Technical writing skills.
Assessment: Completion of written Abstract and editorial by Week 4
Value: 10%
 
MODULE C* - SEMINAR SPEAKING SKILLS
Convenor: S1 - Steve Wroe and Rob Brooks
Session 1 and 2 (probably only C1 in Session 2)
Time: Weeks 3-5, Monday 10am - 1 pm, OR Tuesday 9 am-12 noon
Place: Room 456
Contact hours: 9 hours (max)
Content: 15 min. presentations on various ethical or professional issues.
Assessment: Based on contribution to discussion, attendance etc, but not on presentation. Notes on their performance will be linked to Intro and Final Seminars.
Value: 20%
(Introductory Seminars in Weeks 6 and 7)
 
MODULE D* - PROFESSIONAL ETHICS
Convenor: Mark Adams
Session 1 only
Time: Weeks 8,9: Monday 10am - 1 pm, and Tuesday 9 am-12 noon

Content: 90 minute tutorials by HPSC, Suthers, Cohen, Dunlop/Lennox,
  • History & Philosophy of Science - 4*90 min lectures
  • Cohen: Business of Fraud - 2 lectures
  • Suthers: Interesting case studies of fraud - 1 lecture
Assessment: One hour test in Week 10

MODULE E* - QUANTITATIVE METHODS (LIMIT TO 20 STUDENTS)
Convenor: Iain Suthers
Session 1 only
Time: Weeks 10,11, 12; Monday 10am - 1 pm, and Tuesday 9 am-12 noon

Content: 90 minute tutorials by Suthers, Cohen, Brander, Banks, Steinberg, Poore, and post-docs on quantitative methods.
  • Suthers: Graphing the 3rd dimension, Regression, PCA, Time series analysis
  • Cohen: krigging? Contour plots?
  • Brander
  • Banks: Environmental ANOVA designs
  • Steinberg: Environmental ANOVA designs
  • Poore: Multidimensional Scaling
  • Developing a mathematical model
Assessment: a one hour test in Week 12

MODULE F* - GEOLOGY PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE (LIMIT TO 20 STUDENTS)
