Career outline:
Peter Fox is Executive General Manager, Stakeholder Relations for NSW-based coal seam gas company Eastern Star Gas (ESG). Peter was appointed to the newly created role in February 2011, to coordinate ESG’s dealings with the general community, government, media and other stakeholders with an interest in the company’s activities. Graduating with an Honours Degree in Chemical Engineering from Sydney University and a Graduate Diploma in Petroleum Engineering from UNSW, Peter has more than twenty years’ experience in a range of commercial, corporate and strategy roles across the production, transmission and distribution sectors of the natural gas industry.
Talk abstract:
Natural Gas has been known to be present in the abundant coal seams of NSW for decades. Whilst limited exploration and production of this gas has occurred since the early 1990s, it is only in the last 5 years that large production projects have been developed. Coinciding with this movement to commercial-scale projects, questions have been raised about the industry’s environmental sustainability, as well as concern over potential conflicts with existing land uses.
The manner in which these matters are being addressed and the positive economic and environmental benefits of securing a local gas production industry for NSW will be examined, with a particular focus on the next major project to be developed, the Narrabri Gas Project in the state’s central north.
