POST GRADUATE RESEARCH FORUM BEES POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH FORUM
29th to 31st October 2008 If you are a full-time Post-Graduate student, then you are required to make a presentation either at the June or November PRF. Part-time students give presentations every second year.
SEMINAR TYPES
There will be 3 types of seminars: Introductory (20 min + 10 min questions), Mid-Term Review (30 min + 10 min questions) and Research Updates (15 min + 5 min questions). If you started Full-time study this session, or Part-time study session 2, 2007; then you will be required to present your Introductory Seminar at the June PRF. If you started F/T study in Session 1, 2007, or P/T study in S2, 2006, then your Mid-Term Review is also due at the June PRF. In the third and subsequent years full-time students are expected to present a Research Update Seminar once a year, and part-time students every second year. Please refer the Post-Graduate Manual on the BEES Website http://www.bees.unsw.edu.au./school/docs/pgmanual.pdf for further information.
WRITTEN REPORTS
Presenters of Introductory and MTR Seminars are required to prepare a written report as detailed in the Postgraduate Manual. Presenters of Research Updates are required to file a Progress Report using a form that is available from Firoza (f.cooper@unsw.edu.au ). When preparing reports, please follow the instructions in the Postgraduate Manual. WRITTEN REPORTS MUST BE SUBMITTED TO EACH SUPERVISOR, CO-SUPERVISOR AND PG COMMITTEE MEMBERS - Please give to Firoza 9 copies of your report to be distributed to the PG committee.
Firoza will prepare the agenda for the October PRF. Would all Post-Graduate students please email her indicating whether they will be presenting a seminar at the PRF. Please also mention the times when you and your supervisor and co-supervisor(s) will be available. We will try to group seminars by research field. In your email, please include the following information: Name of the student, Phone contact, Name of the supervisor, Thesis topic, and Type of presentation (Intro/RU/MTR). Please also indicate when you will be available to chair a session.
Reminder to all post-grad students and academics:
You are expected to attend most but not all talks. BEES BEST SPEAKER PRIZE and
ZPB AWARD FOR CONSERVATION There will be two prizes, the BEES Best Speaker Prize worth $100, and the ZPB Award for Conservation worth $250, donated by the Zoological Parks Board. The latter award is for the best presentation by a postgraduate student with an emphasis on practical conservation. Students wishing to be considered for the ZPB Award should notify Firoza Cooper and Karen Firestone. Any student whose research relates to conservation is encouraged to expand on the conservation aspects of their research topic during their talk. The winning talk could be an Introductory Seminar, or Mid-term Report, or Research Update. (NB Seminars will still need to follow the standard format for an IS, MTR or RU.)
